Hello, I’m Theresa Carpenter!
LIFE
I’m a retiring naval officer with 29 years of service. For ten of those years, I served as an enlisted aviation electrician. I then became a surface warfare officer, and now I’m a Navy public affairs officer. Within weeks of separating from my ex-spouse in April 2013, I moved to San Diego and went on two deployments. For 15 months, while assigned to an amphibious assault ship, I visited more than 10 countries, immersed myself in local cultures, made great friends, and honed my career skills. This is when I began blogging as a way to share insights through storytelling to help myself and others.
SERVICE
I have since relocated five times in the last eight years, went through another breakup after my 1st marriage, lived in Bremerton, Washington, met my now-husband, got assigned to an aircraft carrier that deployed in a combat zone, and moved back to San Diego. A couple of years later, I moved to Norfolk, Virginia, and then two years later, I found myself serving in England for the largest maritime component of NATO. I spend my time traveling on cruise ships, occasionally doing DIY YouTube videos with my husband, podcasting for my show Stories of Service (S.O.S. for short), and engaging in activism. My writings focus on struggle, love, friendships, career, saving money, personal accountability, war, toxic bosses, and overall leadership, a "tapestry" of life reflections. Shared Unity at SecDef’s Confirmation Hearing
Last January, during Operation Full Court Press—a grassroots, citizen-driven effort to secure our now-Secretary of Defense’s confirmation—there were countless transformative moments.
War Tails: The Untold Story of Pets Abandoned in Ukraine’s War Zone and the Heroes Saving Them
When war devastates a nation, one impacted population is often forgotten: pets. These loyal companions provide us with joy and comfort, yet during crises, they’re inevitably deprioritized as human survival takes precedence.
Moving my Boxer dog overseas while serving in the military
In October of 2021, I received the opportunity of a lifetime to get stationed overseas working for NATO. I was supposed to be so excited—the chance to serve in Europe with a job promising adventure and travel.
Want to speak up in the military and still be promoted?
In the digital age, there is no shortage of people sharing on social media. The world is dependent on online communications. The digital landscape is vastly different since my time as a brand new public affairs officer in 2006, when there was controversy surrounding a destroyer executive officer who had the novel idea to write a ship’s blog.
Why I got diagnosed with Complex PTSD
Yesterday, during our annual Suicide Prevention training, I shared my story of childhood trauma, where I endured mental abuse on a routine basis for the first 17 years of my life at the hands of a caregiver.
I almost retired overseas from the military but then changed my mind
I decided this last month to continue serving in the Navy and keep going after 27 years of service. Ultimately, among other reasons, there was still some room left for me to make an impact on the teams I serve on, so it was right for me to carry on.
How a chest of drawers falling on me taught what a classroom can’t
After graduating from high school, I watched as my friends went off to college. I was broke and unable to support myself, so I joined the Navy.
